THE impossible tree

This project is about researching and establishing the aesthetic of modern-day witchcraft. I want to find out what constitutes as Pagan beliefs and what this means to people. I will research various beliefs in relation to self-identifying witches, Wiccans and Pagans such as Herbalism, Alchemy and Deity Worship. I want to explore these themes through the medium of sculpture and photography.

I want to explore the notion of what a pre-Christian alter would look like for the modern witch. Something natural such as a tree combined with more modern man-man products like scented and dyed candles. I also want to explore the notion of an ever-growing sculpture. My final intent for this piece will probably outgrow the boundaries of this assessment as I want to continue adding and melting candles to this structure until the naturalism of this piece is completely engulfed by wax, showing a dedication to a craft and ever-growing community of those creating new beliefs and practise outside of an organised religious space.

Paganism is something that was born from being ostracised and destroyed by an invading culture. The roots of paganism have stretched across dead and dying cultures and revived them. People can now pick and choose the aspects of those cultures to practise their own spiritualism. It’s a seemingly impossible feat, beauty and faith growing from an impossible place of oppression and decimation. Thus I want to create an capture that in my sculpture. The Impossible Tree.

I made each candle as part of my Elemental Candle collection in my Incantrix Candle store. However, for the purpose of this project they are each meant to represent a point of the pentacle, corresponding to a certain element. Each one is coloured and scented following the rules of alchemy and herbalism as applied by modern witches. The candles are as follows; purple is the spirit candle scented with frankincense, the red the fire candle scented with cinnamon, the yellow is the air candle scented with peppermint, the blue the water candle scented with vanilla and finally the green is the earth candle scented with tea tree.

A lot of research went into this project which I logged in what I like to called my grimoire sketchbook. I read many books on spell-casting and herbalism and searched countless blogs from self proclaimed witches to gather this information that led to decisions I made in my final piece.
